NAXOS

Naxos

Best Greek islands

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades archipelago with a combination of great beaches, food and villages to explore. Naxos has an area of 429 square kilometers (166 square miles) and a coastline of 148 kilometers (92 miles).

Naxos is known for its beautiful beaches, picturesque villages, and historical sites. The island has a mountainous landscape, with the highest peak being Mount Zeus at 1,004 meters (3,294 feet). The fertile valleys and hillsides of the island are covered with olive groves, vineyards, and orchards.

One of the unique attributes of Naxos is its ancient history. The island was a major centre of the Cycladic civilization and has been inhabited since the 4th millennium BC. The ancient city of Naxos was a powerful center of trade and culture, and its ruins can still be seen today. The most obvious to visitors is the Portara, which is a massive marble doorway that remains from an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo. It is an imposing structure near the main town of Naxos (Chora), and it offers stunning views of the island’s coastline.

Naxos is also famous for its marble, which has been used for centuries in sculptures and buildings around the world. The island’s traditional architecture is characterised by white-washed houses with blue shutters and doors.

Naxos is an excellent destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and water sports. The island’s many beaches offer opportunities for swimming, surfing, and windsurfing, while its mountains and valleys are perfect for exploring on foot or by bike.

Naxos island hotels

Naxos is a large island with multiple settlements so there’s a good choice of places to stay. The more traditional style hotels and rooms tend to be located near the coast but there are now plenty of villa/suite complexes inland offering a quieter environment with sweeping views of the island.

Around the Chora you have the higher end places like Polis, Alkyoni, Majestique, Porto Naxos, and Astir. Mid range options include Korali, Poseidon and Adriani. At the lower end price wise are choices like Maroulis, Anixis, Sanoudos and Kapetanos.

Down towards Agios Prokopios and Ag Anna there is another group of properties, many with beach views and easy access. Lagos Mare and Birikos are in this area with Lianos Village and Kavuras Village a little further north.

Heading down towards Plaka you’ll find Aegean Land, Plaza Beach, Golden Sand and Naxos Island Escape. And for some luxury Depis Edem a little back from the coast.

Further south things get quieter and there are still plenty of choices for a comfortable stay – check out Mikri Vigla Hotel, Evripus Suites, 9 Muses and Phoenicia Naxos Luxury Apartments.

Another option is to stay up in the hills behind Naxos Chora – in Glynado you’ll find Seven Suites (great breakfasts here) and Naxian Album. Not far away you’ll find Belogna Ikons and Ariadne’s Crown Suites at Vivlos.

Paros Naxos

Best sights on Naxos

The Portara is probably the first landmark you’ll see if you’re arriving by ferry. This marble doorway from an unfinished temple is very popular at sunset, with photographers looking to get that perfect shot before heading back to Naxos Chora for dinner.

Wandering around the maze of streets in the old part of Chora is also a favourite activity. Lots of little shops, cafes and restaurants – you’re bound to get lost at some point but dont worry about it. At the top of the Chora you’ll find the Kastro (Venetian Castle) and nearby the Archeological Museum.

There are plenty of villages to visit in Naxos too – Apeiranthos is a good example and a nice stopping point if you’re heading to the fishing village of Moutsouna. Chalki also a popular stop (coaches!) and there you’ll find the Kitron Liquer distillery (Vallindras).

Apollonas in the north-east of Naxos is also worth a visit – a nice beach ringed by tavernas and cafes.

For something different, there is an abandoned hotel near Alyko Beach which has been well grafittied – something for the teenagers perhaps.

Naxos best beaches

Agios Georgios is a good start, particularly nice for a beach so close to town. Sandy with all the facilities you need for a good day.

Agios Prokopios is a bit further south, just as good but not quite as developed.

Next heading south is Agia Anna with plenty of places to stay nearby. Very popular.

Island hopping Naxos

Naxos is right next door to Paros so that’s an obvious choice for a combination but Naxos also links well with many other islands including Koufonisia and the other Small Cyclades islands, Amorgos and Syros
