Megas Gialos Syros

Megas Gialos Syros is a small beach side village on the south coast of Syros Island. It’s about a 20 minute drive (around 13 kms) from Ermoupoli and is a good location for a holiday on Syros if you like a base that is quite and away from the crowds but still has easy access by car to all the popular places on the island.  It’s not a big settlement but in common with many areas on the islands, more and more villas are being constructed in the slopes behind the Megas Gialos Syros beach area.

Megas Gialos Syros Beach

The main Megas Gialos beach is a sheltered cove with decent sand and a gentle sloping entry, making it perfect for families with young children. The beach is not very deep so it can get a bit crowded at busy times. Part of the beach is ‘organised’ with umbrellas looked after by the Fuego taverna across the road but there is still plenty of room to set up you own area.

Megas Gialos Syros beach is a really nice setting with the cove looking out towards Paros and the church of Antonios on the right hand side as you look out to sea. As mentioned there is the Fuego taverna/bar across the road where you can get your refreshments and there is also a mini market near the southern parking area. There is plenty of parking with a second free area at the eastern end of the cove.

Megas Gialos Syros – Talaras Beach

To the east of Paralia Megas Gialos, you’ll find the quieter Talaras beach. It is similar in style but not organised and perhaps the outlook is not as pretty. There are 3 separate areas to lay down your towel and all are generally sandy – not quite as shallow as Megas Gialos though.

Megas Gialos Syros – best places to eat

The Talaras taverna has a great spot opposite Talaras beach and offers good homestyle Greek food at a reasonable price. Its a top choice for lunch or dinner in the Megas Gialos area.

Fuego offers a more casual style for snacks and drinks, again a pleasant setting on a covered terrace opposite Megas Gialos beach. They also service the beds located on the sand.

Megas Gialos Syros – what’s nearby

Ampela Beach Syros

Ampela is another sandy cove just to the south west of Megas Gialos. It is also secluded  and sheltered with plenty of sand for easy access. There is also the Ampela taverna with a nice covered area for those important refreshments.

Achladi Beach Syros

Achladi is a small beach on the way to Vari which has plenty of fans. Its another sandy beach in a sheltered setting with a snack bar and a limited number of beds/shelters and a small marina.

Vari Beach Syros

Vari is a slightly larger more traditional beach area to teh east of Megas Gialos. You’ll find a partially organised beach area in the cove as well as multiple eating options – N’Plo and Enlefko are two popular options for eating and there’s also the Kiboo cocktail bar.

Makryonitis Distillery

Just up the road at Vari you’ll find Syros’ own distillery – Makryonitis. You can see how the various spirits are produced and (of course) sample both the commercially available offerings (Ouzo and Tsipouro) plus some special bottles only at the distillery.

Agathopes Beach

If you fancy a nice beach that is a bit livelier than Megas Gialos Beach, then perhaps a visit to Agathopes is for you. There’s a big ‘organised’ area of beds and umbrellas opposite Calma and there’s also the Ono Concept Beach Bar which offers a very comfortable beach environment with bar, restaurant, massage and even merch.

Megas Gialos Beach – best places to stay

As mentioned, there are an ever increasing number of places to stay in the Megas Gialos beach area.

If you’re interested in the hotel style, Hotel Aleaxndra and Emilia Luxury Apartments are both good choices – well located near the beach with spacious roos and friendly/helpful hosts.

If villas are more your style, Villa Mavromichali and Villa Petros are both located on the peninsula at the eastern end of Megas Gialos beach with great views over the water out to the east. A little further east, Villa Lefki looks good and is in a lovely position.

Down towards Ampela Beach you’ll find Elefthia Syros near the beach and Blue Eros Luxury Villa out on the southern headland.
