Greek Islands in October
Greek Islands October weather
Greek Islands in October can still get plenty of warm sunny days. The not so good news is that the weather can be a little more ‘changeable’ rather than the settled pattern seen through the height of summer. In late September/early October 2020 for example, the Zorbas ‘Medicane’ (Mediterranean hurricane) caused havoc with ferries and plenty of damage. Be assured this is not a common event though.
In terms of temperature, daytime maximums in Naxos for example average around 23C (73F) ad minimums around 17C (62F) – still pleasant depending on what you are used to. And still warm enough for beach swimming although teh first half of the month is likely to be better than the second half for obvious reasons.
So for packing, you might need to pack some light jumpers/jackets and probably some long pants for the evenings.
Greek islands – what are the best islands in October
There is no question that some of the operators who are just on the islands for the main tourist season will start to close down in October. That doesn’t mean that everything closes but it does mean you need to choose your island and area carefully.
Stick to the islands with larger populations
The best Greek islands in October will have a large permanent population, it’s likely that tavernas and bars will still be relatively lively in October. And within those islands, you might be best to concentrate on the main towns rather than the tourist areas.
Some islands might be very very quiet
Now some solitude may be what you are looking for, as long as you don’t mind restaurants that you’ve been reading about all summer being closed. It’s sometimes difficult to predict as some may make last minute plans based on visitor numbers they are seeing. So if numbers have been strong, they may choose to push on a bit longer.
Best islands in October
Syros
Syros is a good choice at any time of the year and in October Ermoupoli will still be well populated and buzzing. It’s likely that some of the beach areas like Kini and Agathopes will be quieter but they will still be good for a visit. And if the weather is indifferent for a couple of days, there are plenty of options around the town.
Naxos
Naxos is in a similar position. Naxos Chora will still be lively although perhaps not every venue will still be operating. Beach areas close by will still be operating but those a bit further away (eg Plaka) will start closing up.The villages will still be very quiet and great for a visit.
Paros
Naoussa Paros is a great place to visit but in October, it may have that ‘end-of-season’ feel about it. Parikia may be a better choice if you prefer more life. Again villages like Lefkes will be even quieter than normal.
Islands to avoid in October
