Greek ferry tips for first time users

Ferries are a way of life in the Cyclades and whilst using them might seem a bit daunting for first timers, there are a few things you can do to make the whole process smoother.

  1. Make sure you arrive for any connections in plenty of time. Whilst it is unusual for ferries to be early, it does happen. And it gives you plenty of time for tip number 2.
  2. Make sure you know which boat you need to get. At some wharves you can get multiple ferries arriving at the same time. It could be fun to go on a mystery tour but you’ll probably want to get on the right ferry. The boat name is usually printed on your ticket – if in doubt ask a friendly local.
  3. Stowing luggage in the hold – it’s always a frantic time when you board the ferry and have to leave your luggage in the hold before you go to the seating area. Take your valuables with you but leave your luggage. There’s often a specific area for each destination for the luggage – again ask the crew if you’re unsure.
  4. Know your stop – it’s helpful to know the sequence of stops if you’re passing a few islands and always listen out for the announcements when you’re approaching your destination stop.
  5. Find your correct seats – particularly if you are on a full catamaran, you’ll have allocated seats and it’s best to use them – again ask the crew for help if you need it. In the larger boats at non busy times, it doesn’t matter so much.
  6. Enjoy the ride – the best bit is when you approach a new island and the ferry ramp goes down – it’s a time of anticipation before the frenzy of disembarkation. Then its down the ramp with the suitcases and you’re trying to find your pickup in amongst all the others.
  7. And when you’re leaving (sadly) it’s good to be at the back of the boat if you can for those last pictures to remind you of your stay on the island.

And finally a pro tip – My Ship Tracking  is great for seeing exactly where your ferry is – just enter the name of the boat to see its exact location.

Enjoy those ferry rides!
