Best Syros Beaches
Best Syros Beaches
- Kini
- Agathopes
- Megas Gialos
- Galissas
- Asteria
Perhaps Syros is not the first island that comes to mind when you’re thinking about beaches in the Cyclades – but in fact there is a pretty good collection of beaches both rocky and sandy, organised and not, accessible and secluded.
When you consider these best Syros beaches alongside the other attractions of Syros (Ermoupoli/Vaporia, seaside villages like Kini, Vari, Azolimnos) it makes for a good package of places to visit and experience.
Asteria Beach
It’s not a normal beach, consisting really of a concrete platform with either steps into the water or a dive if you’re brave. But it probably deserves a place in the best beaches of Syros list. It does mean that if you’re staying in Ermoupoli, you can come for a dip and enjoy one of the cafe bars nearby (Ciel or Sta Vaporia) for some refreshments. It’s really the setting that makes this one unique, being overlooked by the stately mansions of the old sea captains.
Azolimnos Beach Syros
Azolimnos is about 10 minutes by car to the south of Ermoupoli and is one of those Syros seaside villages. I’ve never had much luck with this beach because it is prone to be windy if the breeze is coming from the north and the water can get whipped up a bit. There are trees and municipal (free) umbrellas for shade if you are lucky. There’s plenty of sand and cafes nearby for refreshments.
Agathopes Beach Syros
This must be high on the best Syros beaches list. This is a beach with nice sand and in a sheltered area but it is definitely more organised than some of the others listed here. In common with other islands, the prices for sunbeds have risen significantly for no particular reason – for those in front of Calma Boutique you’ll pay 20 euro upwards depending on whether you want a front row or are happy to sit at the back. Parking is ok if its fairly quiet and you’re there early – other wise you could be on the road to Komito (see below). There’s also the option of the Ono Concept Bar for a comfortable stay if you like to do it that way (warning though, the music can be a little much).
Komito Beach Syros
This is a small sandy beach just down the road from Agathopes. It used to be quieter than Agathopes but the Nomad Bar does crank out the music and that may upset the ambience. Also cars are driven right along the beach which does subtract from the attraction. There are some free as well as paid umbrellas available.
Kini Beach Syros
Kin Beach is definitely one of the best Syros beaches – a lovely spot on the west side of Syros just over the hills from Ermoupoli. The beach has become more organised over the years with some comfortable beds and service options now on offer. The beach itself is very family friendly – nice sand and very gentle slope into the water. In fact you have to go a long way out to get any depth. Just behind the beach, there are options for lunch with Allou Yialou the best known and Aeriko at the northern end a good place too. There’s also the Thalassa cafe and Ntanos bakery for more casual fare. Just round the southern corner is the tiny Lotos beach if you want to go exploring.
lso at Kino you can take a boat to some of the more remote Syros beaches to the north west of the island like Aetos and Barbarousa.
Galissas Beach Syros
South of Kini is the small village and beach of Galissas , a real family holiday area. It’s another beach that has got more organised over the past few years but in truth its not generally the most attractive beach – the sand is not the best and the beach is not always clean. aVentoura, Cavos and Argo offer eating options with Manousos providing good Gyros for a feed.
Finikas Beach Syros
Finikas is another nice village just north of Agathopes. The beach is narrow but mainly sandy with some free umbrellas if you’re lucky. Another similar beach just down the road is Voulgari. The refreshment options here are good – you’ve got the Ora taverna by ‘Finikas Square’ or if you dont mind a bit of a stroll, the Baobab Syros is a great spot to wile away some time and watch the boating action at the marina.
A bit further round from Baobab is Kokkina Beach – a mixed rocky/sandy beach, small and very quiet with a few umbrellas. Bring your own supplies or stop in at Baobab!
Megas Gialos Beach Syros
The main Megas Gialos beach is another of the best Syros beaches and is an attractive cove in the south of the island. Its south facing and so a bit protected from northerlies and its another sandy and very shallow beach, very popular with families. There are some sunbeds looked after by Fuego where you can also grab your drinks and food on the terrace over the road from the beach. Ampela is another cute beach just to the south west of Megas Gialos.
Vari Beach Syros
Vari is a traditional seaside village and another beach in a sheltered cove, with some umbrellas available on the sand . There is plenty of holiday accommodation around and this is another family area. Bolaki is a cute coffee place over the road and you have Enlefko, N’Plo and Bolas to choose from for eating places.
Achladi Beach Syros
Achladi is just out further in the cove from Vari and is a small beach but with a lovely outlook. It has the Achladi Seafood Taverna which will provide you a good seafood meal while you are there.
Fabrika Beach Syros
Fabrika is a small sandy/pebble beach to the east of Vari and typically quiet. There’s not much there so bring any supplies with you, maybe from Vari.
Delfini Beach Syros
Delfini Beach to the north of Kini is a little wilder than some of the others here and vulnerable to the wind. It’s a mixed sand/stones beach with some umbrellas available and a small beach bar.
Nudist beaches on Syros
For those of you keen on the clothing optional beaches, the most popular are:
Katergaki Beach Syros – to the south east of Vari – a secluded cove but rather rocky
Armeos Beach Syros – just round the headland from the main Galissas Beach – nice secluded beach with a few trees
Delfini Beach Syros – some nudists utilise the rocky area of teh beach
