If you spend any time with locals involved in tourism in the Cyclades , you may well hear the comment lament – ‘we dont want to become the next Mykonos’. But they do want to attract more tourists to their island though.
The problem is how to gradually build tourism incomes without ‘over-development’ that put undue pressure on the local infrastructure – local roads for example. Islands like Paros and Sifnos are under pressure as developers see visitor numbers return. to pre-COVID levels (2023 is to record based on pre-booking numbers) and the local governance is not well equipped to resist their plans for resorts and villas.
Let’s hope that the right balance can be found for all parties over the next few years.
